Homeowner Water Horror Story
On a snowy day at the Central New York Home show a nervous woman approached me with a sad story. She moved into her Fayetteville home over 15 years ago. This was the home where the children grew up and memories made. Life was great until a little problem turned into a daily worry.
Her basement started to have a water problem. First, she cleaned up the water with a small towel. A month or so later she noticed another puddle. She cleaned the area with bleach and moved boxes of pictures and kid’s artwork away from the walls.
After the next rain, water ruined a box full of her high school ribbons. She thought who cares, it’s her old stuff. Thank heavens it wasn’t kids pictures. Once again she cleaned up, but this time there seemed to be a bit more water so she got out the shop vac. The next rainstorm ruined a box of old baseball cards her son had saved. She decided it was time to move things off the floor.
A quick trip to Home Depot and now boxes were on cinder blocks away from the walls. She did notice that the paint on the walls was starting to flack off and the bottom of the water heater had some rust on it. Where was the water coming from they thought?
She and her husband went to work on the backyard to fix the problem. The first step was to clean out the gutters and make sure the water was going away from the house. The next, they added a small stone french drain to cut the water from the neighbor's yard. All this seemed to help with the problem until a late summer storm. Once again more water, more clean up.
They needed a new plan. If they could figure out where the water was coming they could stop it right away with the shop vac. The water seemed to come in random. One time on the wall the next from a crack, the water was impossible to pin-point. That’s when her husband came up with an idea!
That night they went out to Best Buy and bought a security camera. They installed the camera in their basement to watch for water. With the App installed on her phone, she was ready. If water was coming they had a routine in place.
She would grab the old towels and start blocking the water. First towels around the water heater, then in front of the washer and dryer. While Her husband started the shop vac and began sucking up the water.
At this point, they thought about calling in professional help. This homeowner has had work done on her home before and didn't want to deal with contractors. When they put in the addition they felt the contractor ripped them off.
For now, their security camera Plan was working well, until they went away for vacation. From a hotel room in Florida, they watched helplessly as the water started to rise in their basement. Luckily their son lived down the road. He came to the rescue and stopped the water. The thought flashed through her head, would they ever be able to go on vacation again? She and her husband sat sleepless in their hotel room. They had to do something.
That’s when she heard about Woodford Bros., Inc., she heard we were a different kind of contractor. No Pressure, no sales gimmick. We fix problems for homeowners. That’s why on that cold day in February she approached me. I assured her that she didn’t have to live like this anymore. We could stop the water and sleepless nights. I could feel the tension lifted off her shoulders. She started to trust and see how we are different.
