Your Concrete and Central New York Winters... They don't mix!
Does your concrete have freeze-thaw damage?
Did you know that concrete poured at four inches thick expands at a quarter-inch per 100 feet?
Let's break that down in English... it's small but powerful. The movement can have a big impact on your concrete.
All concrete expands and contracts as temperatures rise and fall. The more extreme the temperature, the more extreme the movement. That's why in CNY we have tons of cracks and other damage.
We get around most of these problems with Control joints. You know those lines cut into your concrete. Control joints are there to help your concrete to expand in a controlled manner.
The big problem is when water gets into the control joints. What do you think happens when those cracks fill with water and freeze? That’s right! It either causes damage to occur at the joint or it forces an ugly uncontrolled crack elsewhere in the slab.
During the freeze-thaw cycle, these cracks can take on water, which then freezes. That's why you see so much concrete around here with ugly edges.
In this case, we have the solution. We call it NexusPro. NexusPro is a silicone-based sealant for joints. NexusPro stands up to harsh weather conditions all while keeping the water out. Unlike other sealants, NexusPro resists UV rays, which means it won't crack, bubble, or dry out. Now the water can't get in, so ice can't form in the joints and cracks.
